The XII Olympiad was originally to be hosted by the city of Tokyo, Japan. However, Tokyo was stripped of the Games by the International Olympic Committee due to the outbreak of the Second Sino-Japanese War. The Japanese government had itself abandoned support for the Games in 1938.
The runner-up in the original bidding process, Helsinki, Finland, was then awarded the Games and built the Helsinki Olympic Stadium as the main venue. Eventually the Games were suspended indefinitely following the outbreak of World War II.
