Legacy of the Games
Twenty eight national delegations participated in the Tel Aviv Games. Despite being banned from the Olympic Games due to its apartheid policies, South Africa continued to compete in the Paralympic Games, having made its debut at Tokyo four years earlier. It was formally banned from competing in the Paralympic Games in 1980.
The sports programme for the Tel Aviv Games was led by Gershon Huberman and included more events than the previous Tokyo Games. The new events included lawn bowls, women’s wheelchair basketball and the 100m wheelchair race for men. Changes in classification systems were also made for the athletics, wheelchair basketball and swimming competitions.
