St. Louis United States, 1904

The city of Chicago had originally been granted the 1904 Summer Olympics, but the organisers of the ‘Louisiana Purchase Exposition’, a World Fair also planned for 1904 in St Louis, Missouri, would not accept another international event in the same time frame.

The exposition organisation began to plan its own sporting activities in direct competition to the Olympic Games and eventually Pierre de Coubertin was forced to move the Games to St Louis to tie in with the World Fair.
