Legacy of the Games

The competitions were divided between five disability groups: wheelchair athletes with spinal cord injuries (whose events took place at Stoke Mandeville); amputees who competed either on foot or in wheelchairs; athletes with visual impairments; athletes with cerebral palsy; “Les autres” or athletes with physical disabilities who had not been eligible to compete in previous Games.

In total, 45 countries competed in the New York events and 41 in the Stoke Mandeville events.

The New York competitions were held in the Mitchel Athletic Complex and at Hofstra University, both situated in Long Island.
