Moscow Soviet Union, 1980

Moscow was chosen to host the 1980 Olympic Games at the 75th session of the International Olympic Committee on 23 October 1974 in Vienna. The only other candidate city was Los Angeles, which hosted the following Games in 1984.

Although most events took place in Moscow itself, the yachting competition was held in Tallinn, with some football matches held in Leningrad, Kiev and Minsk. These were the first Olympic Games to be held in Eastern Europe.
