At the 29th Session of the International Olympic Committee in Barcelona in 1931, Berlin won the bid to host the XI Olympiad, beating Barcelona.
This was the second and last time at which the IOC session was held in a candidate city. The only other time this occurred was the inaugural IOC session in Paris in 1894, where Athens and Paris were chosen to host the 1896 and 1900 Games respectively. The 1931 session was also the first time at which IOC members cast their votes for their favourite city.
Berlin had previously won the bid to host the 1916 Olympic Games, which were utlimately cancelled on account of World War I.
