Legacy of the Games

In the aftermath of World War I, Hungary, Germany, Austria, Bulgaria and Turkey were all banned from competing in these Games. Germany remained banned until 1925.

The Antwerp Olympics saw the first use of the Olympic flag created by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, with its five rings signifying the union of five continents It was also the first time an athlete took the Olympic oath and the first time doves were released as a sign of peace.

Also for the first time, only National Olympic Committees were allowed to enrol participants.
