Antwerp Belgium, 1920

The initial choice to host the VII Olympiad had been Budapest, which was picked ahead of Amsterdam and Lyon. However, as the Austro-Hungarian Empire had been a German ally during World War I, the Games were transferred to Antwerp in 1919, in recognition of the suffering that city had undergone during the war.

Although the majority of events took place in Belgium, the 12-foot dinghy sailing event took place in Dutch waters and the Games are therefore officially considered to have taken place in both countries.
